David Huffman was born May 10, 1955 in Burlington, North Carolina. He attended the Burlington
Public Schools and graduated from Walter M. Williams High School in 1973. Thereafter he attended
Wake Forest University graduating in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Business and
History. Following graduation, Mr. Huffman worked in retail banking with Southern National Bank in
Lumberton, North Carolina and Burlington Chemical Company in Burlington, North Carolina in purchasing
from 1978 through 1981.
In November, 1979, at the age of 24, Mr. Huffman was elected to the first of six, four year terms on the
Burlington City Council.
Beginning fall of 1981, Mr. Huffman began graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill earning a Master of Public Administration degree in 1983 with a concentration in state and local
government. Beginning August 1983, he attended law school at Mercer University's Walter F. George School
of Law in Macon, Georgia graduating in 1986, cum laude. Following graduation, Mr. Huffman clerked for
Bibb County Superior Court Judges C. Cloud Morgan and Bryant Culpepper from 1986-7 before associating
with the insurance defense firm of Jones, Cork & Miller in Macon, Georgia. In February 1989, he returned
to Burlington and joined in partnership with attorneys G. Wayne Abernathy and James K. Roberson. With
Abernathy, Roberson & Huffman of Graham, North Carolina, Mr. Huffman was engaged in the general
practice of law including family law, real estate closings and litigation, felony and misdemeanor criminal law,
personal injury, wills and estate litigation, general civil litigation and consumer bankruptcy.
In January 1990, Mr. Huffman was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the Burlington City Council. He
was subsequently re-elected to successive four year terms in 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007 totaling
twenty-seven years of public service on the Burlington City Council including two years as Mayor Pro Tem.
Since 1994, David R. Huffman has been engaged in his solo law practice at 103 West Elm Street,
Graham, North Carolina, parties G. Wayne Abernathy and James K. Roberson having been elevated to the
Alamance County District Court bench. Mr. Huffman concentrates his practice in family law litigation and
consumer bankruptcy. In addition, Mr. Huffman handles district court criminal and traffic cases, will
preparation, estate probate, estate litigation and general civil litigation.
Mr. Huffman is a certified mediator in the family law equitable distribution practice area.
Mr. Huffman has been married for twenty-eight years and has two grown children.
